Toby is a writer drawn to flawed, searching characters, with emotional development sitting at the centre of his storytelling. He gravitates toward black comedy‑drama, using humour not to undercut tragedy but to illuminate it, and to show how people joke, flail and improvise their way through grief, guilt and absurdity. His work consistently looks for the laugh buried inside the wound, exploring how humour becomes a coping mechanism when the world stops making sense. He has written for both stage and screen, with projects optioned and produced in the UK, US, Canada and Switzerland.
